Continued Learning is the Key to Building a Successful Workforce

As Plutarch said, “Education is the kindling of a flame, not the filling of a vessel.” Acknowledging the importance and significance of ongoing learning is so critical in both our personal and professional lives. In fact, companies that provide opportunities for continued learning and training are more likely to have more highly engaged employees who are satisfied and loyal. 

As a family, we are big believers in self-improvement through learning; we want to pass on that knowledge to others. Encouraging knowledge transfer and continuous learning are absolutely necessary for success as a company—especially one that hopes to grow and compete with corporate giants.

My father has always valued learning. It’s something that he’s fostered and nurtured in his company from the beginning. One of the greatest perks THP offers employees is the opportunity to carry on learning. The current educational system does not yet focus on workplace skill development. It is a common problem across the world, and it means coaching or on-the-job training is very important. This is particularly the case in Vietnam where very few companies give their staff management or leadership training.

And while on-the-job training and learning typically lead to increased loyalty, THP doesn’t mind if staff members leverage its training opportunities and leave, because that benefits society, too. My father loves nothing more than when former employees get in touch with him, or give him flowers on Teachers Day, which is celebrated on November 20 in Vietnam. It also helps to highlight THP’s culture to other companies.

As a family, we believe in developing our capabilities so we can live life to the fullest. We believe in giving service to others. Many of our training programs are geared around this concept. In 2019, we are training managers to believe in our fourth core value: nothing is impossible.

Nothing is impossible when approached with a spirit of learning and a desire to grow and stretch. One of our core values also speaks to the importance THP places on continuing education with a sincere belief that today is better than yesterday but not as good as tomorrow. It’s this value that inspires us to encourage the spirit of learning, sharing, and innovative thinking with the goal of making our products, relationships, and selves better than we were before.

Ongoing training and transparency have played a significant role in THP’s success through the years. My father is the one to be credited for this. He’s always been a firm believer that great employees and leaders are trained, not born. He’s understood all along that in order to build a sustainable organization that had integrity, was customer-focused, and whose employees worked well together, he would need to provide the training necessary to achieve those goals.
