Graphic Designer

Carly serves as a Senior Designer on our formidable graphic design team. She collaborates with our authors to visually capture the spirit and content of their book. Each cover receives careful attention, with Carly typically conducting a “cover call” to kick off the process. These calls, in addition to thorough questionnaires, allow her to explore the author’s stylistic preferences and sift through their ideas. She shows sample covers to learn what they stylistically gravitate towards. This involved process gives authors a hands-on role in the creation of their cover. Carly’s position demands a mastery of Photoshop, inDesign, and graphic design as a discipline and art form. The ability to connect with each author is equally important, as it helps her to coax their vision, even when they’re unsure how to articulate it. Processing and construing author feedback is also critical.

Carly’s professional background is nothing if not awe-striking. She attended the North Carolina State School of Design, and moved to New York upon graduation. Between 2006 and 2011, she worked for Martha Stewart in the role of Corporate & Television Art Director. There, she handled provided art direction on ad campaigns and photoshoots for The Martha Stewart Show, and designed event collateral and signage. Between 2014 and 2017, she served as the Retail Merchandising Art Director for L’oreal-owned haircare brand, Redken. She developed merchandising strategies for the brand and effectively built the department from the ground up.

Other career highlights include: packaging design for Peter Thomas Roth, off-air graphics for Food Network, and packaging design for Bath & Body Works.
